Job Summary

Works with a team to safely install and replace underground utilities while operating various types of construction equipment.

Essential Job Functions:

• Assists in the installation of underground cable lines with the primary function of heavy equipment operation
• Safety operates heavy equipment including excavators, backhoes, front end loaders or skid steers to excavate or move dirt, rock and/or other materials
• Loads or assists with loading materials or equipment
• Prepares equipment and executes all pre work trip inspections prior to mobilizing work on job site
• Assists in securing work site and equipment at the end of each shift
• Prepares various documents, reports, and/or checklists related to work, equipment and safety
• Follows SSB’s Excavation Procedures at all times when executing a work plan
• Remains safety conscience at all times displaying awareness of pedestrian, co-worker and vehicular traffic through the work area
• Safely and efficiently operates company vehicle as needed
• Assumes responsibility for all tools and equipment on assigned truck and ensures their return at the end of each shift
• Reports lost or damaged equipment to immediate supervisor as soon as it is discovered
• Checks, maintains and uses proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) as issued in compliance with OSHA and company safety rules and regulations
• Performs routine maintenance checks on all machinery and reports any excessive wear or damage
• Keeps up to date with and ensures compliance with all company safety policies and procedures
• Identifies and corrects existing and/or potential safety violations
• Ensures the security and cleanliness of trucks, tools, equipment, vehicles, storage and work areas
• Remains up to date and knowledgeable with regard to industry best practices and procedures to maximize job performance
• Performs other functions as assigned

Job Requirements:

• Must have a valid Class D driver’s license and clean driving record *obtaining a Class A CDL is strongly encouraged*
• Previous experience operating heavy equipment
• Must demonstrate the ability to read, interpret, and apply basic safety, operations, and industry procedure norms
• Must have the ability to learn and utilize basic knowledge and understanding of general utilities operations
• Must demonstrate the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form
• Must demonstrate the ability to treat customers, clients, vendors, and co-workers with dignity and respect while acting at all times with integrity and honesty

Preferred:

• Previous underground utilities construction experience

Physical Demands:

• Must possess good physical fitness and range of motion including, but not limited to, the ability to occasionally lift and carry loads up to 50 pounds
• Must possess the ability to physically excavate with hand tools and manually operate a wheelbarrow
• Must possess the ability to operate compaction and other machinery necessary to complete projects
• Must be able to tolerate work in extreme outdoor weather conditions including humidity, heat and cold
